How to open a QBW file without QuickBooks: your real options

You have a .QBW company file, no active QuickBooks Desktop subscription, and you need what's inside. Maybe the view-only year ran out, maybe you inherited the file from a bookkeeper or a closed business. Here are the actual options, from easiest to hardest, with the tradeoffs stated plainly.

1. Check whether you're still in the view-only year

If the subscription ended less than 12 months ago, QuickBooks Desktop on the original machine should still open the file in view-only mode: you can see data and print reports, but not edit, and third party tools won't connect (Intuit's documentation). 2. The 30-day trial window

Intuit offers a free 30-day trial of QuickBooks Desktop Enterprise. Enterprise can open Pro and Premier company files (it will upgrade the file format, so work on a copy). Thirty days is enough time to open the file and do a thorough export. This is the most practical free option for a one-time rescue.

3. Ask an accountant

Accounting professionals often run QuickBooks Desktop Accountant editions with active licenses and can open a client's file, print what's needed, or export data as a service. If you already have an accountant, this can be a one-email solution.

4. Specialized QBW readers
